Some time ago, I wrote about the Conform-o-meter and how it works (you can read the posts here and here if you missed them). It’s an important part of the game because getting it to the maximum 5 stars will boost the cash and XP you collect from everything in the game by 5%. And this week, I dug deep into the files to look for a definitive answer on which building contributes to which rating:

You can open up your Conform-o-meter and check where you currently are with your Consumerism rating by tapping on the stars at the bottom left of your main screen.

You keep your Consumerism rating high, and help to maximize your conformity bonus, by having enough shops for your town (or, as the game says, by buying stores for suckers to drop dough). And every shop, whether it’s regular, premium or limited-time, contributes 10 points towards the rating. So what can you build that will help you boost your Consumerism rating? Here’s a list:

Regular Shops:
– Kwik-E-Mart (and the Kwik-E-Mart Franchises)
– Android’s Dungeon
– King Toot’s

Premium Shops:
– Try ‘n’ Save
– Sprawl-Mart

Limited-time Shops:
– House of Evil (Halloween event – no longer available)
– Mapple Store (Christmas/winter event – no longer available)
– Howard’s Flowers (Valentine’s event – no longer available)
– Sir Putt-a-lot’s (Valentine’s event – no longer available)

I was a little surprised in putting together the list – Springfield doesn’t have as many stores as I’d thought it did! And that means that players who missed out on the limited-time buildings or who don’t want to buy premium buildings may have to buy a second or third Kwik-E-Mart to take their rating to its maximum.

But just how many shops do you need to get that 5-star rating at each level? Fortunately, the answer is “not many”, although the release of level 29 raised the bar a bit. Here’s the breakdown:

It seems that no final conformity bonus contribution has been confirmed for the last two Whacking Day prizes. I’ll check in after the update and see whether the situation for these has changed.

But in digging into the files, I was surprised to find that a couple of buildings appear to contribute nothing to the Conform-o-meter, something you’ll see repeated in tomorrow’s post on the limited time buildings.

So, here’s part 3 of the series covering all the premium buildings that are not limited-time. The table below sets out the donut price of the building, the XP you get on construction, the rating the building boosts (if any), and the points it contributes to that rating. The information here supersedes information in earlier posts (which will all be updated soon):

Yesterday, I posted the first part of a guide the game buildings and the Conform-o-meter category they contribute to (and you can read it here), and the day before I posted on the points needed in each category at each level (you can see that post here).

Each building you construct contributes a certain number of point to a different part of your Conform-o-meter and helps you to maximize your conformity bonus. While a 5% bonus doesn’t sound like much, this extra amount every time you collect cash and XP from rent and jobs is part of what helps you build up the game dollars you need to progress easily in the game.

This post is a little different from yesterday’s post in that, for level 24 onwards, I’m showing the base price in the file – the price the building will eventually drop to. Buildings up to level 23 are already selling at their base price and shouldn’t drop any lower. But for buildings from level 24 and up, a multiplier is at work, to keep them up until the next level increase. the multipliers seems to be as follows:
Level 24: 1.3x
Level 25: 1.3x
Level 26: 1.4x
Level 27: 1.6x
Level 28: 2x
Level 29: 3x
The multipliers don’t create different prices for different people. Rather, they’re the reason prices of the buildings at higher levels drop each time a new level is released.

So, here’s part 2 covering the buildings from Jake’s up to the Skinner House and the base price of the building, the XP you get on construction, the rating the building boosts, and the points it contributes to that rating. I’ve posted on the Conform-o-meter and its various components before. Keeping the Conform-o-meter at its maximum gives you a 5% bonus on all your cash and XP collections – but it can be quite difficult to manage sometimes, especially when a new level is released.

I’ll be updating all of the posts soon to take into account the new levels during this week (you can find them all by typing “Conform-o-meter” in the search bar at the bottom of the page). But with the drop in the Righteousness, Obedience and Consumerism ratings that seemed to come automatically for many players with the release of level 29, I thought I’d share with you something I found in the files.

To get that 5-star rating on any of the 8 elements of the Conform-o-meter, you need to reach a certain number of points. The points are linked to a value for each building or activity that has an impact on the Conform-o-meter and are hidden in the game data – and the points required for a 5-star rating change every time you level up. To see which of your ratings is likely to change as you move up in the game, here are the points required for each level:

Last week, I wrote about how you can improve your Consumerism rating on your Conform-o-meter (you can read that post here) . But just how many shops do you need to get a 5-star rating and head towards that maximum 5% conformity bonus on all your cash and XP collections?

Fortunately, the answer is “not many”. Here’s the breakdown:

Level 10-11: 4 shops
Level 12: 5 shops
Level 13-16: 6 shops
Level 17-27: 8 shops

These numbers show why it’s difficult to get 5 stars at lower levels, but much easier at higher levels – and also why you’re able to buy a second or a third Kwik-E-Mart from quite early on in the game.

One more thing – you’ll notice that Android’s Dungeon isn’t on the list. While you and I may think of it as a store, the game doesn’t. It has a stack of dollars above it, which makes it a public building. Apparently comics build Obedience!

Springfield’s movie theater, the Aztec Theater is a premium item that, like Springfield Observatory, is one that many people overlook. If you’re one of them, it may be worth thinking again – and here’s why:

1. It earns you a solid $200 and 20 XP every 8 hours.
2. As a “cash register” building, it boosts the Consumerism rating on your Conform-o-meter.
3. It’s a similar size and shape to Moe’s Tavern (although just slightly bigger), making it very easy to place anywhere in your town.
4. It gives Bart something extra to do – a 3-hour task that earns more than his 4-hour task, as you can see here:

5. It also gives Comic Book Guy what he would probably call the “Worst.Task.Ever.” – but it’s a 6-hour task that earns more than his regular 8-hour task:

6. If you have Squeaky-Voice Teen, it also gives him something else to put on his résumé:

And here are a couple of reasons why you may decide not to buy it or you may decide to put it off until later:

1. No new characters come with it, which is always a bit disappointing for a building.
2. You don’t have Bart, Comic Book Guy, or Squeaky Voice Teen yet, which would mean that it sat unused and unloved.
3. Bart really shouldn’t be allowed to see R-rated movies.

On balance, I think it’s a good purchase – and this is mainly because, like the Springfield Observatory, it helps a regular character do a task at a premium rate. I’m still waiting for the Itchy and Scratchy Movie, though.

A couple of days ago, I wrote a post on the Conform-o-meter and how it works (and occasionally doesn’t). You can find it here. Keeping your Conform-o-meter at 5 stars is an important part of maximizing your cash and XP collections for your buildings and your character’s jobs.

This post looks at some of the things that can happen in the normal course of your game to cause your ratings (and your conformity bonus) to vary. Just as a reminder, your conformity bonus comes is calculated from 8 factors (6 for Android players):

So what can happen in normal gameplay that has an impact on your Conform-o-meter?

1. Unlocking characters/buying premium characters: both of these actions can cause drops in your Indolence, Consumerism and Gluttony ratings. More characters often means you need more houses, restaurants and shops. And more criminal or corrupt characters can have an impact on your Righteousness rating.

2. Buying land: expanding your town but leaving the land vacant can cause your Consumerism, Gluttony and Obedience to drop. It helps your Tree-Hugging rating, though.

3. Housing mix: it seems that your housing mix has an impact on a number of elements of your Conform-o-meter elements, including Obedience, Righteousness, and Consumerism. If there’s an imbalance between your cheaper houses and your more expensive houses, the meter will be affected (which is good enough reason for house farmers to farm Blue or Pink Houses rather than Brown Houses).

4. Your characters’ behavior: ignoring tasks has been reported as having an impact on Obedience. And the behavior of Chief Wiggum and Mayor Quimby can have an impact on Righteousness – it seems that if either of these two repeatedly engage in corrupt activities, the meter will drop. In a way it makes sense – corruption lowers their authority and leads to an increase in crime.

5. Pollution: you probably noticed that unlocking the Power Plant had a negative impact on your conformity bonus and you needed to plant some more trees to make up for its environmental impact. Failing to clean up debris also hurts your Vanity and Tree-Hugging ratings.

At this stage of the game it’s a long journey before you get any new characters, but the buildings come fairly quickly. With one more restaurant and one more shop, that’s healthy for both your Consumerism and Gluttony ratings on your Conform-o-meter.

This walkthrough looks at game level 16. It takes you through unlocking the Gilded Truffle and King Toot’s. Remember, though, that level 16 is really the minimum level you need – frequent players with lots of friends may well be at a much higher XP bar level before any of these buildings unlock.

Another important point is this – some players have reported a delay between placing their first bet Springfield Downs and the start of the Gilded Truffle quest. If this is you, don’t worry, as things seems to start moving again on their own. Just keep all your characters in similar length tasks, do all the randon tasks that come up, don’t hurry any of them into new tasks too quickly, and everything should be okay.

Remember that Marge needs to be free as Homer at the end of the Springfield Downs build (keep Bart, Milhouse, Ned, Moe and Reverend Lovevoy free as well to be safe – their tasks may seem random, but these were the ones that I had in both my games and so have other people):

1. Quicky at the Kwik-E Moe shops at the Kwik-E-Mart (1 hour – this may come up earlier)
2. Quicky at the Kwik-E Ned shops at the Kwik-E-Mart (1 hour – this may come up earlier)
3. Can’t Live with ’em, Still can’t Live with ’em Reverend Lovejoy counsels couples (24 hours – this may come up earlier)
4. Teamwork! Milhouse goes to school (6 hours) and, at the same time, Bart skips school (8 hours – this task may come up earlier)
5. Time to Clean House Starting down the path to building the Gilded Truffle, Marge cleans the house, which has got very untidy while she’s been away (3 hours)
6. Actions Speak Louder Than Quietly Whining There’s no monorail in the new Springfield, but Marge protests something anyway (24 hours, although we’re not exactly sure what she’s protesting – keep Homer free as she finishes)
7. What’s in the Back Room? Making a bit of money on the side, Moe smuggles endangered species (8 hours and one of my favorite animations in the game – this task may come up earlier)
8. Truffle Surprise Part 1 The Gilded Truffle is close – but first, Homer has to visit the track (3 hours)
9. Truffle Surprise Part 2 Getting closer still, Homer shops at the Kwik-E-Mart (1 hour – keep Marge free as finishes to be safe)
10. Truffle Surprise Part 3 Homer and Marge interact to prompt you to build the Gilded Truffle – which happens because, when Marge goes to makes reservations, she realizes that it hasn’t been rebuilt yet (24 hours and $31,000 – keep Homer and Marge free as the build finishes)
11. Truffle Surprise Part 4 In a simultaneous task, Homer and Marge dine at the Gilded Truffle (2 hours each – and it really is nice to make them do this at the same time – keep Principal Skinner and Lisa free as they finish)
12. The Mysterious Brown House Part 4 Somewhere about this stage of the game, the Brown House gets a new use, as Cletus sneaks in to harvest copper wire (3 hours)
13. We Don’t Sell myPods Part 1 Principal Skinner and Lisa interact to start you on the path to building King Toot’s. Before you can do that, though, Lisa needs to play her sax three times (4 hours each)
14. We Don’t Sell myPods Part 2 Three times was too much, it turns out:

Lisa: Oh no, I just broke my last reed! This is a woodwind emergency!
And with that King Toot’s is ready to build (24 hours and $37,000 – keep Apu free as the build finishes to begin the Police Station quest)

The stars at the bottom left of your screen tell you the current rating for your town. Tapping on these takes you to your Conform-o-meter, which is a very important part of your game:

The more stars you have, the more money and XP you can collect from buildings or from your characters’ jobs. But to maximize your collections, you need to keep your ratings high in 8 areas:

(Note: Android players have a slightly different Conform-o-meter, without Righteousness or Socialism, both of which are affected by the social part of the game. These will appear at the same time as Origin does.)

All of these 8 areas come together to give you a conformity bonus of up to 5% on all money and XP collections. But just how they work can sometimes be a bit of a mystery. Here, then, is an overview of what each one does and what it’s affected by:

1. Indolence: affected by the number of houses you have compared to the number of characters you have – type of housing and housing balance can also have an impact
2. Consumerism: affected by the number of stores you have for the number or characters you have
3. Tree Hugging: affected by the trees, bushes, and pollution you have in your town
4. Vanity: affected by the number of type of decorations and special objects in your town
5. Obedience: affected by the number of government and public services you have for your town population
6. Gluttony: affected by the number of restaurants you have for your town population.
7. Righteousness: affected by a combination of your criminal population and their moral behavior, as well as by leaving and cleaning up graffiti
8. Socialism: affected by the number of Origin friends you have and how frequently you visit them

This means that there are a few things that happen regularly in the game that will have an impact on your Conform-o-meter – and I’ll take a look at some of those in part 2…
